What I Said in the Dark
A coach’s account of the blackout, and why he did not draw a single play.

People ask me what tactical genius I used in the final. The honest answer: none. I put the clipboard down.
You cannot draw a play in the dark. What you can do is look at the five people next to you and decide what kind of people you are going to be for the next four minutes.
A question instead of an instruction
I asked each of them what they needed. Water. A hand on the shoulder. Ten seconds alone. Whatever it was, I gave it.
Coaching is mostly deciding when to stop coaching.
